Stages and Signs of Peri-Menopause and Menopause
Peri-menopause, the phase prior to menopause can last from 5-15 years with the patient experiencing some of these symptoms.
Symptoms such as vaginal dryness can occur prior to menopause. Around 17% of women aged 18-50 experience this symptom before entering its onset, making sexual activity difficult. In addition, you may experience loss of sexual interest or stimulation.
Signs of menopause may include:
• Hot flashes
• Sleep irregularities
• Depression
• Weight gain
• Vaginal dryness
• Anxiety
• Loss of sexual interest
• Vaginal atrophy
Vaginal atrophy is a significant problem and affects sex drive and intimacy. In a 2014 study conducted in America and published in Menopause, researchers found that painful sex related to vaginal atrophy negatively affected both men and women and was shown to be a primary reason for decreased sex drive and avoiding sex.
During menopause, many women experience hot flashes and night sweats, resulting in lack of sleep and deep REM sleep so that they are too fatigued for sex.
Weight gain also plagues many menopausal women causing them to have lower self-esteem and develop a poor body image. This frequently leads to depression, which can be compounded by the results of lack of estrogen. Irritability or moodiness may occur leading to a poor environment for sexual pleasure by either partner.
