Why Everyone’s Turning to Tinted Sunscreen This Summer
Sunscreen is a necessity for the summer. But while sun protection is important, many people wonder how this step will fit into their skincare and makeup routines. More importantly, how can you protect your skin while also avoiding the dreaded white cast of a traditional sunscreen?
Luckily, many companies have launched tinted sunscreen for both face and body. Read on to learn more about how to find the best tinted sunscreen for face and body.
All about tinted sunscreen
Whenever a two-in-one or three-in-one product is announced, people are often hesitant – and with good reason. Sure, it’s easy to see if the tint is working, but can tinted sunscreen actually protect you from the sun?
According to Harvard Medical School, they can, and here’s how: “Tinted sunscreens combine broad-spectrum mineral UV filters, like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, with added pigments — pigmentary titanium dioxides and iron oxides — that create the visible, skin-tone color that can reflect away visible light. The colored base of tinted sunscreens is created by mixing different amounts of black, red, and yellow iron oxides with pigmentary titanium dioxide, resulting in a tinted sunscreen that can be matched to any skin tone.”
So, essentially, tinted sunscreens have all of the sun-protecting ingredients you know and love, they just also have some pigments added to better shade match (and avoid patchy sunscreen!)
The use cases for tinted sunscreen
A two-in-one that actually works? That sounds too good to be true – is it for everyone?
Theoretically, yes. If the product line offers your shade and you aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients it should work. In fact, many studies show that tinted sunscreen is particularly helpful for those suffering from melasma or hyperpigmentation.
According to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, “Tinted sunscreens use different formulations and concentrations of iron oxides and pigmentary titanium dioxide to provide protection against visible light. Many shades of tinted sunscreens are available by combining different amounts of iron oxides and pigmentary titanium dioxide to cater to all skin phototypes. Therefore, tinted sunscreens are beneficial for patients with visible light-induced photodermatoses and those with hyperpigmentation disorders such as melasma and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation.”
And tinted sunscreens just aren’t for our faces, either. Many companies now offer tinted sunscreen for your whole body, allowing you to have all-over, smooth, and cohesive sun protection.
How to find the best tinted sunscreen
While finding the right shade will obviously be high on your list of attributes you are looking for an effective tinted sunscreen, don’t let that facto overtake your search. In fact, even if the shade’s not perfect, you can always layer the product. But what you can’t do is change the level of sun protection it has.
Some things to look for (besides the shade) when choosing the best tinted sunscreen include, but are not limited to:
- An SPF 30+
- Ingredients that fit with your “goals” (i.e. mineral-based for no white cast)
- Iron oxide if you are looking for blue light protection
And don’t forget to apply every two hours for best results!
